DIY Picture Frames: A Complete Guide to Making Your Own with Wood and Paint

Displaying your favorite photos and artwork can instantly transform the look and feel of your home, but buying pre-made frames can be expensive. Fortunately, creating your own DIY picture frames is a fun and cost-effective way to showcase your cherished memories. In this guide, we will walk you through the steps to make your own picture frames using wood and paint.

Materials You Will Need:

  • Wood boards (1x2 inch or 1x3 inch)

  • Saw

  • Measuring tape

  • Sandpaper

  • Wood glue

  • Clamps

  • Paint or stain

  • Paintbrushes

  • Picture hangers

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Measure and Cut the Wood Boards Measure the length and width of your artwork, then add 2 inches to each measurement. Cut four pieces of wood to those dimensions using a saw.

  2. Sand the Wood Use sandpaper to smooth the edges and surfaces of the wood boards.

  3. Glue the Wood Together Apply wood glue to the ends of two of the wood boards, then clamp them together. Repeat for the other two wood boards. Allow the glue to dry completely.

  4. Paint or Stain the Frame Paint or stain the wood frame in your desired color. Allow the paint or stain to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

  5. Attach the Picture Hanger Attach a picture hanger to the back of the frame. You can also add a piece of cardboard or foam board to the back of the frame to keep the artwork in place.

  6. Insert the Artwork Carefully insert your artwork into the frame and secure it in place with the hanger or additional cardboard or foam board.
